Abstract

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought about significant transformations in many aspects of life, including the legal sector. AI now serves not merely as a supportive tool but has evolved into a system capable of making decisions independently. This creates new legal challenges, particularly regarding liability for actions taken by AI. This study aims to explore the status of AI as a legal subject and the types of legal liability that can be applied from a contemporary legal perspective, particularly within the Indonesian legal system. The research method employed is normative legal research using a conceptual and comparative approach. The legal sources utilized include primary, secondary, and tertiary sources, which were analyzed qualitatively. The findings of this study indicate that the current legal system still treats humans as the primary subjects of legal liability, meaning there are no clear regulations regarding the legal status of AI. Therefore, the development of flexible legal concepts is necessary, either by granting limited legal status to AI or by strengthening the liability of developers and users. This study is expected to contribute to the development of more comprehensive and responsive regulations regarding future technological advancements.
