Abstract

Macapat is one form of Javanese oral literature that plays an important role in traditional performing arts, particularly Javanese dance. In dance performances, Macapat songs function not only as musical accompaniment but also as a linguistic medium that helps convey the meaning of movements, atmosphere, character traits, and philosophical values to the audience. This study aims to examine the integration of Macapat songs as a linguistic medium in Javanese dance performances and to explain their linguistic and aesthetic functions in developing the dancers’ wirasa (emotional expression and sensitivity). This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Data were collected through a literature review and indirect observation of documented dance performances in the Surakarta and Yogyakarta styles. The results show that Macapat songs function as a medium of linguistic communication, a builder of dramatic structure, a reinforcement of the dancers’ emotional expression, and a means of conveying philosophical values in Javanese dance performances. This integration is evident in the use of various Macapat meters adapted to the characteristics of the scenes and performance styles. Thus, Macapat songs hold an important position in maintaining harmony among literary, musical, and movement elements in Javanese performing arts, while also contributing to the preservation of traditional culture.
