Abstract

The Past Lives movie represents complex and non-linear interpersonal relationship dynamics, making it compelling to be examined through the perspective of Social Penetration Theory. This study aims to analyze how the process of social penetration occurs within the relationships between characters and how emotional closeness is constructed and developed throughout the film’s narrative. The method used in this research is a qualitative approach with narrative analysis to identify the stages of social penetration reflected in the interactions and dialogues between characters. The findings indicate that the process of social penetration in Past Lives does not occur in a gradual and consistent manner, but is influenced by factors such as time, distance, and cultural background. Self-disclosure emerges as a crucial element in forming emotional closeness, although the relationships portrayed do not always reach the level of intimacy typically achieved in a relationship. In addition, interpersonal relationships may experience stagnation or regression under certain conditions. This study contributes to enriching the field of interpersonal communication, particularly in understanding the dynamics of social penetration in complex and reflective relationships, as well as demonstrating the relevance of the theory within the context of media and film representation.
